Companion Robots Steal the Show at World Robot Conference 2026

As the 2026 World Robot Conference opens in Beijing, the quietest machines in the room — emotionally intelligent companion robots — are emerging as the breakout category, backed by a market projected to hit $5.24 billion by 2036.

Starting August 19, the 2026 World Robot Conference opens in Beijing, and if early exhibitor announcements are any indication, this year's breakout category is not the fastest-running humanoid or the strongest mechanical arm. It is the quietest, most emotionally intelligent machine in the room: the companion robot.

Across the show floor, companies are showcasing robots designed to listen, remember, and initiate conversation — not just execute tasks. UBTECH Robotics is highlighting its UWORLD U1 Series, whose pre-orders have surpassed 10,000 units. DOBOT unveiled the LUMO, a "full-habitat" embodied humanoid built for daily-life participation. Haier opened China's first AI home robot experience center in Qingdao on August 16, letting consumers test exoskeleton walkers, housekeeping units, and cooking robots in a realistic home setting.

The shift is visible beyond the trade show circuit. Nursing homes in Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Shenzhen now run companion robots on daily shifts. New York State's ElliQ program had 834 seniors enrolled by mid-2025 — with over 3,500 applicants on the waiting list.

The conversation used to be about industrial arms and warehouse automation. Now it is about a robot that remembers your birthday and reminds you to take medication.

Technology Context

What changed? Multimodal large models and embodied intelligence have crossed a threshold. Robots can now recognize more than 20 fine-grained emotions with over 90% accuracy, sync lip movements to speech within 20 milliseconds, and initiate conversations proactively instead of waiting for a wake word.

China alone had over 320 million people aged 60+ by the end of 2025 — roughly 23% of its population — and that number is expected to cross 400 million within a decade. In the U.S., the 65+ population reached 61.2 million in 2024. Japan sits at 29.3%. Every major economy is graying, and there simply are not enough caregivers to go around.

Affordability remains a barrier too. Most current deployments are institution-funded; true consumer-level pricing is still a few years away.

Implication: Companion robots are moving from a curiosity to a care infrastructure category the same way smartphones moved from a luxury to a utility — slowly, then all at once.
